A Descriptive Research on Gender-based Problems, Challenges Experienced by Female Tourist Guides and Solution Suggestions

Abstract

Women employed in the tourism industry and related sub-sectors sometimes face gender-related problems and challenges, as in many other fields. This can have a negative impact on both tourists' satisfaction and experience, as well as the careers of tourist guides. Therefore, it is important to focus on the challenges and difficulties and try to find realistic solutions to them. This study aims to reveal the gender-related problems experienced by female in the tourist guiding profession, offer solutions to overcome these problems, and contribute to the related literature. A semi-structured interview, which is a qualitative approach, was preferred as a data collection method. Between 28 March-26 April, 2024 the researcher used purposive and snowball sampling methods to send questionnaires via e-mail and other digital platforms to professional female tourist guides who agreed to participate in the study. The answers received from 16 female tourist guides were examined by the researcher and subjected to descriptive analysis. The findings indicate that all of the guides who participated in the study have encountered various gender-based negative situations, and the majority of them think that the profession is male-dominated. On the other hand, it is possible to categorize the gender-based problems and challenges perceived by female tourist guides under three headings: (1) the structure of the sector, (2) the structure of society and family, and (3) the nature of women. Finally, based on the findings of the study and the related literature, some solutions to the gender-related problems faced by female tourist guides are presented.

Pek çok farklı alanda olduğu gibi turizm endüstrisi ve buna bağlı alt sektörlerde çalışan kadınlar, zaman zaman cinsiyet kaynaklı bazı sorunlar ve engellerle karşı karşıya kalmaktadır. Söz konusu durum, hem turistlerin memnuniyetini ve deneyimini hem de turist rehberlerinin kariyerlerini olumsuz yönde etkileyebilmektedir. Bu nedenle, zorluklara ve güçlüklere odaklanmak ve bunlara gerçekçi çözümler bulmaya çalışmak önemlidir. Bu araştırma, turist rehberliği mesleğinde kadınların yaşadığı cinsiyet kaynaklı sorunları ortaya koymayı; söz konusu sorunların giderilmesine yönelik çözüm önerileri sunmayı ve ilgili literatüre katkı sağlamayı amaçlamaktadır. Veri toplama yöntemi olarak nitel bir yaklaşım olan yarı-yapılandırılmış görüşme türü tercih edilmiştir. Amaçlı ve kartopu örnekleme yöntemleriyle 28.03.2024-26.04.2024 tarihlerinde soru formları araştırmaya katılmayı kabul eden profesyonel kadın turist rehberlerine elektronik posta ve diğer dijital platformlar aracılığıyla iletilmiştir. 16 kadın turist rehberinden alınan cevaplar araştırmacı tarafından incelenmiş ve betimsel analize tabi tutulmuştur. Bulgular, araştırmaya katılım sağlayan rehberlerin tamamının çeşitli cinsiyet kaynaklı olumsuz durumlarla karşılaştıklarına ve büyük çoğunluğu mesleğin erkek egemen olduğunu düşündüklerine işaret etmektedir. Öte yandan, kadın turist rehberlerinin algıladıkları cinsiyet kaynaklı sorun ve engelleri; (1) sektör yapısına (2) toplum ve aile yapısına ve (3) kadınların doğasına ilişkin olarak üç başlık altında toplamak mümkündür. Çalışma kapsamında son olarak araştırmadan elde edilen bulgular ve ilgili alan yazından yola çıkarak kadın turist rehberlerinin karşılaştığı cinsiyet kaynaklı sorunlara bir takım çözüm önerileri sunulmuştur.
