The Wisdom in the Poems of the Abbasid Poet Ibn al-Rūmī

Abstract

Great poets were raised in the first centuries of the Abbasid Empire, which lasted for about five centuries, considered very productive in terms of Arabic poetry. One of them, Ibn al-Rūmī, is a poet who has the most voluminous divan of Arabic poetry. The outstanding side of the poet, who has penned the poem in almost every theme, is indisputably his unruly satires. So much so that when satire is mentioned in the poetry of the Abbasid period, the first name that comes to mind is Ibn al-Rūmī. When we look at the academic studies about the poet in the Arab world, it is seen that most studies focus on his satirical poems. However, the wise couplets of Ibn al-Rūmī interspersed with praise and satire-themed poems are also considerable. Even the poet has qaṣīdas dedicated to the theme of wisdom. While conveying his own life experiences in these wisdom poems, the poet often resorted to similes and metaphors, increasing the persuasive power of his statements and making his words turn into parables. Such qualified couplets are frequently encountered in his large divan. On the other hand, the relatively low-quality couplets that the poet did not try to embellish with any literary art and did not resort to a simile or metaphor to embody his message were also noticed. In this study, remarkable examples of Ibn al-Rūmī’s poems with the theme of wisdom in these two parts were selected and examined in terms of content and literary arts.Yaklaşık beş asır süren Abbâsîler Devleti’nin Arap şiiri açısından oldukça verimli kabul edilen ilk asırlarında büyük şairler yetişmiştir. Bunlardan biri olan İbnü’r-Rûmî (öl. 283/896), Arap şiirinin en hacimli divanına sahip bir şairdir. Hemen her temada şiir kaleme almış olan şairin temayüz eden tarafı tartışmasız onun kural tanımaz hicivleridir. Öyle ki Abbâsî dönemi şiirinde hiciv denildiğinde ilk akla gelen isim İbnü’r-Rûmî’dir. Şair hakkında Arap dünyasında yapılmış akademik çalışmalara bakıldığında çoğu araştırmanın onun hiciv şiirlerine odaklandığı görülür. Hâlbuki İbnü’r-Rûmî’nin methiye ve hiciv temalı şiirleri içerisinde serpiştirilmiş hikmet içerikli beyitleri de hatırı sayılır bir kemiyettedir. Hatta şairin hikmet temasına tahsis ettiği kasideleri vardır. Şair bu hikmet şiirlerinde kendi hayat tecrübelerini aktarırken çoğu zaman teşbih ve istiarelere başvurarak ifadelerinin ikna gücünü arttırmış ve sözlerinin birer mesel haline dönüşmesini sağlamıştır. Bu tür nitelikli beyitlere hacimce büyük divanında sıklıkla rastlanmaktadır. Diğer taraftan şairin herhangi bir edebî sanatla süslemeye çalışmadığı ve mesajını somutlaştıracak bir teşbih yahut istiareye de başvurmadığı görece düşük nitelikli beyitleri de fark edilmiştir. Bu çalışmada İbnü’r-Rûmî’nin bu iki kısımdaki hikmet temalı şiirlerinden dikkat çeken örnekler seçilmiş ve bunlar içerik ve edebî sanatlar açısından incelenmiştir.
