The surface plasmon resonance (SPR) phenomenon is a proposed technique for studying the behavior of biointeraction pairs and has resulted in successfully commercialized sensor platforms, unlike the analytical techniques that are often confined to the laboratory environment. With the aid of SPR techniques, based on one of the interesting optical science findings, the molecular accumulation that creates a change of 10−5th of the refractive index at the examined interface can be measured. This sensitivity allows analysis to be performed in the pico- to nanomolar (pM-nM) ranges in most applications. In this chapter, we have discussed the basic application principles and the history of SPR sensors, some milestones in the development of plasmonic techniques, the position of SPR techniques in bioscience, surface modification, as well as preparation techniques used in these analyses. We also covered benchmarking with some other methods and future prospects of the SPR-based research. © 2023 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
