Abstract

This study explores the concept of simile, its definition, and its significance by examining how simile can be effectively used to convey ideas and information to the audience, making the meaning more accessible and mentally comprehensible. The research draws on examples from Dr. Muhammad Sa'id Ramadan al-Buti’s commentary on al-Ḥikam al-ʿAṭāʾiyya, illustrating how he employs literary simile to transmit scientific and spiritual content to the reader. The study consists of an introduction and two main sections. The first section defines simile, outlines its types, and highlights its importance in simplifying and communicating complex ideas from speaker to listener. It also introduces Dr. al-Buti’s commentary on al-Ḥikam al-ʿAṭāʾiyya, provides a brief overview of his scholarly life, and presents background information on the original text and its author, Ibn ʿAṭāʾ Allāh al-Sakandarī. The second section presents selected examples of simile and demonstrates how they aid in conveying ideas to the reader, with a focus on Dr. al-Buti’s commentary. Each example is analyzed individually, explaining the general meaning of the simile, its intended message, and the benefit it offers in context.
