The main objective of this thesis is to remove Reactive Red 195 (RR195) dye, commercially used in textile production, from wastewater using biosorption methods, without discharging it into the aquatic ecosystem, thus maintaining its value at an appropriate level and protecting the sustainability of natural life. In this study, different biosorbents (hawthorn, coconut, grapefruit and peach) and the artificial silica-based adsorbent SBA-15 were first tested for the removal of RR195 dye from aqueous solutions (their usability as biosorbent-adsorbent). According to the results obtained, the Crataegus biosorbent (Crataegus species (hawthorn; a mixture of hawthorn, fruit, and seeds)) effectively removed RR195 dye from aqueous solutions. After determining the biosorbent sample that yielded the best results, optimization studies were carried out for this biosorbent. For this purpose, the effects of pH, biomass amount, particle size, contact time, and initial dyestuff concentration, which are the most important parameters affecting biosorption, were investigated. The effects of contact time and initial dye concentration were tested as a function of temperature (at 25, 35, and 45°C). Following the optimization process, the suitability of the obtained data to some isotherm (Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, and Dubinin-Radushkevich (D-R)) and kinetic models (pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second order, and intraparticle diffusion) was investigated to better understand the biosorption interaction (mechanism) between the biosorbent and the dyestuff. Thermodynamic calculations (Free energy (ΔG°), Enthalpy (ΔH°), and Entropy (ΔS°)) of biosorption were then performed. The experimental data were found to conform to the Langmuir isotherm model at room temperature. When the kinetic and thermodynamic calculations of adsorption were examined, it was concluded that the pseudo-second-order kinetic model of biosorption was suitable and that the reaction was spontaneous. To better understand the physical and chemical properties of the biosorbent, pre-biosorption XRD (phase structure determination), FT-IR (functional group determination), zeta potential (surface charge), SEM/EDX (surface morphology), and after-biosorption SEM/EDX, MAPPING, and FT-IR analyses were performed. As a result, it is thought that the Crataegus biosorbent used can be used as an economical and environmentally friendly biosorbent in the removal of RR195 dye, considering that it can be easily prepared by drying and grinding methods under natural conditions without the need for any chemical processing, and that it provides over 90% removal in a short time such as 20 minutes (in dye and simulated synthetic wastewater samples).
