Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) is one of the most economically important vegetable crops both globally and in Türkiye, widely cultivated for both fresh consumption and agro-industrial processing. Root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp.) represent one of the most detrimental biotic stress factors reducing yield and quality in tomato production. Root-knot nematodes penetrate root tissues to feed and form galls, thereby impairing water and nutrient transport and causing significant yield losses. Although chemical nematicides are frequently employed to control these pests, their adverse environmental impacts and the development of resistance increasingly necessitate alternative management strategies. Entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs), widely utilized in biological control, are beneficial organisms that infect and kill their insect hosts. Recent studies have demonstrated that EPNs can exert direct or indirect suppressive effects not only on insect pests but also on root-knot nematodes. In this thesis study, the effects of different EPN species and application formulations on the reproductive biology of root-knot nematodes and certain growth parameters of tomato were investigated. Accordingly, the number of galls, gall index, and egg mass formation, as well as plant height, shoot and root fresh/dry weights were evaluated. The research findings revealed that the efficacy of EPNs varied considerably depending on the selected species and application formulation. Although Steinernema carpocapsae infective juvenile (IJ) applications exhibited limited efficacy in suppressing the reproductive parameters of root-knot nematodes, they provided supportive contributions to certain plant growth parameters. In contrast, live Heterorhabditis bacteriophora and infected cadaver applications were found to be markedly more successful in terms of reducing the reproductive capacity of root-knot nematodes and preserving plant growth. In particular, the live H. bacteriophora application stood out as the most effective treatment, significantly enhancing root fresh and dry weights while exhibiting the highest suppression rate on the reproductive parameters of the root-knot nematode. It was determined that the treatments did not cause statistically significant differences in shoot growth parameters, with the biological effects predominantly concentrated within the root system. In conclusion, EPNs hold high potential as biological control agents in root-knot nematode management; however, further investigations addressing different doses, application timings, and rhizosphere dynamics are required to achieve optimum efficacy under field conditions.
