Chapter 5 examines how molecular cloning identifies and validates drug targets. This process involves identifying and characterising drug targets that interact with potential therapeutic agents by isolating DNA fragments, amplifying them, and inserting them into vectors. Molecular cloning enables the study of drug targets at the molecular level and the production of recombinant proteins for structural studies, illuminating the path to targeted drug design. Integrating molecular cloning techniques with other molecular biology and biotechnology tools increases the understanding of drug targets and their interactions with potential therapeutic agents. Consequently, the discovery and validation of drug targets, which are vital in drug discovery, contribute to developing effective targeted therapies. Despite challenges such as the complexity of some drug targets, the need for better screening methods, and the development of more efficient cloning strategies, these obstacles also present opportunities for future research and innovation. Advances in molecular cloning techniques, more efficient DNA assembly methods, and the incorporation of high-throughput technologies will further enhance our ability to discover and validate drug targets. In summary, molecular cloning is integral in discovering and validating drug targets and responds to many factors affecting drug discovery. © 2024 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
