An Evaluation of Cemil Cahit Cem’s Novel Series Named Kanlı Vakalar Koleksiyonu: Badik Hilmi in the Context of Popular Literature

Abstract

Following the Industrial Revolution and the Enlightenment movements, rapidly changing living conditions led to the formation of a new city-centered culture. As culture entered an industrial production process, it became popular and a new culture called “popular culture” was born. Popular culture, which aimed to appeal to all segments of society, was also effective in the field of literature. Popular literary products aimed to pursue profit rather than aesthetic purposes, to appeal to the reader’s emotions and to ensure that they had a pleasant time in this way. Detective literature, one of the sub-genres of popular literature, focuses on crime and its rational solution. In the West, the crime rate increased due to urbanization and its literary counterpart is seen in a more mechanical framework in the popular genre of detective novels. These types of novels follow a different path in Turkish literature. When we look at the examples of early Turkish detective fiction in general, it can be said that it differs from Western detective fiction with its position against reason and its plot of events and characters. On the other hand, these novels provide data on the sociological, political and aesthetic world of the period in which they were written. The novel series titled Kanlı Vakalar Koleksiyonu, written by Cemil Cahit in 1928, can be read as a continuation of the Ottoman-Turkish detective novel, although it was written during the Republican period, and it also sheds light on the intellectual world of the period it was written in. This study aims to examine the detective elements contained in the Kanlı Vakalar Koleksiyonu and the sociological and aesthetic data underlying it.

Sanayi Devrimi ve Aydınlanma hareketlerinin ardından hızla değişen yaşam koşulları, kent merkezli yeni bir kültürün oluşmasına sebep olur. Kültür, endüstriyel bir üretim sürecine girdikçe popülerleşir ve “popüler kültür” olarak adlandırılan yeni bir kültür doğar. Toplumun bütün kesimlerine hitap etmeyi amaçlayan popüler kültür, edebiyat alanında da etkili olur. Popüler edebiyat ürünleri estetik gaye yerine kâr amacı gütmeyi, okurun duygularına seslenmeyi ve bu yolla hoş vakit geçirmesini sağlamayı amaçlar. Popüler edebiyatın alt türlerinden biri olan polisiye edebiyat ise suça ve suçun akılcı bir yolla çözümüne odaklanır. Batı’da kentleşme nedeniyle suç oranı artar ve bunun edebiyattaki karşılığı popüler bir tür olan polisiye romanda daha mekanik çerçevede görülür. Bu tür romanlar Türk edebiyatında kendine özgü farklı bir yol izler. Erken dönem Türk polisiyesinin örneklerine genel olarak bakıldığında akıl karşısındaki konumu, olay ve karakter kurgusuyla Batı polisiyesinden ayrıldığı söylenebilir. Diğer taraftan bu romanlar özellikle yazıldığı dönemin sosyolojik, politik ve estetik dünyasına dair veriler sunar. Cemil Cahit’in 1928’de kaleme aldığı Kanlı Vakalar Koleksiyonu adlı roman serisi, Cumhuriyet döneminde yazılmasına karşın Osmanlı-Türk polisiyesinin bir devamı olarak okunabileceği gibi yazıldığı dönemin düşünce dünyasına ışık tutar. Bu çalışmada Kanlı Vakalar Koleksiyonu’nun barındırdığı polisiye unsurlar ve arka planda yatan sosyolojik, estetik verilerin incelenmesi amaçlanmıştır.
