The detection and development of fingerprints play a crucial role in forensic investigations. Fingerprints are of critical importance for personal identification in criminal cases; however, they are often found in trace amounts on surfaces, making their detection difficult. Depending on the nature of the surface and the type of fingerprint, different development techniques are employed. In recent years, nanoparticle-based approaches have gained prominence in making latent fingerprints visible. In this study, a new method was developed for the visualization of latent fingerprints in forensic applications. For this purpose, nanoparticle-based developers reported in the literature were examined, and silica-based nanoparticles were identified as an effective and suitable alternative for fingerprint detection. In our study, which utilized a silica-based approach, an innovative nanotechnological strategy combining aptamers and silica is employed, focusing on two key components of fingerprints: eccrine and sebaceous secretions. Within the scope of the study, fluorescent silica nanoparticles functionalized with a lysozyme-specific aptamer, one of the characteristic constituents of eccrine secretions, will be synthesized. In addition, fluorescent silica structures endowed with hydrophobic properties will be produced to enhance binding to fatty acids and wax components present in sebum. As a result, this original approach is expected to make fingerprint detection more sensitive, rapid, and reliable, while offering a less destructive and more economical alternative compared with conventional methods through the use of aptamer–silica-based technology.
