R&D, GROWTH AND FOREIGN TRADE TRIANGLE IN TURKIYE: DIRECTED ACYCLIC GRAPHS ANALYSIS

Abstract

The aim of this study is to identify the causal relationships between R&D expenditures, economic growth and foreign trade in Turkiye. For this purpose, we employ data covering the period 1996-2021 and identify inductive causal inference schemes between these variables through Directed Acyclic Graphs (DAGs) analysis. The obtained DAG patterns show that economic growth directly affects R&D expenditures and these expenditures have a direct impact on the volume of foreign trade. The findings of the study also reveal that domestic fixed capital investments are a direct cause of R&D expenditures.

Bu çalışmanın amacı, Türkiye’de AR&GE harcamaları, ekonomik büyüme dış ticaret arasındaki nedensellik ilişkilerini tespit etmektir. Bu amaçla 1996 – 2021 dönemini kapsayan veriler kullanılmış ve Yönlendirilmiş Döngüsüz Graflar (DAGs) analizi ile bu değişkenler arasındaki tümevarımsal nedensel çıkarım şablonları tespit edilmiştir. Elde edilen DAG şablonları, ekonomik büyümenin AR&GE harcamalarını doğrudan etkilediğini ve bu harcamaların da dış ticaret hacmi üzerinde doğrudan bir etkisi olduğunu göstermektedir. Çalışmadan elde edilen bulgular, ayrıca, yurtiçi sabit sermaye yatırımlarının AR&GE harcamalarının doğrudan bir nedeni olduğunu ortaya koymaktadır.
