Nurses’s and Physicians' Opinions about Patient Restraint Methods in Psychiatry Clinic

Abstract

Objectives: This study was performed to determine the opinios of the nurses and the physicians working in the psychiatry clinics on to the use of the restraint methods. Methods: This was a descriptive study. "Personal information form" and "The opinions of physicians and nurses in the form of restraint" were used as the data collecting forms and were obtained from relevant literature in the study. In the analysis of data, chi-square test was applied. The population consisted of physicians, nurses and employees who work in psychiatric hospitals, inpatient and outpatient clinics. The sample included 53 nurses and 55 research assistants who agreed to participate in the study. Results: There were significant differences between the opinions of the nurses and the physicians in the choices about physical and chemical preferances between the usages of the restraint methods and the application type 2=11.589; p=0.01 . Differences were observed in the decision of using restraint in te following conditions: “restratint should be adjusted according to the patient’s age and weight” 2=4.458; p=0.035 , “the physical/chemical restraint methods must be definitely used in order not to increase in the patient’s violence behaviours ” 2=14.05; pAmaç: Bu çalışma psikiyatride çalışan hemşire ve hekimlerin hasta kısıtlama yöntemlerine ilişkin görüşlerini saptamak amacıyla yapılmıştır. Yöntem: Araştırma tanımlayıcı olarak yapılmıştır. Veri toplama aracı olarak konuyla ilgili literatür taranarak araştırmacı tarafından hazırlanan "kişisel bilgi formu” ve "hekim ve hemşirelerin kısıtlamaya ilişkin görüşleri formu" kullanılmıştır. Verilerin değerlendirilmesinde ki-kare testi uygulanmıştır. Örneklem, araştırmanın yapılmasına onay veren hastanelerin psikiyatri klinik- polikliniklerinde çalışıp, araştırmaya katılmayı kabul eden 53’ü hemşire 55’i asistan hekimden oluşmuştur.
