Abstract

Polonya'nın merkezinde yer alan ve üçüncü büyük kenti konumunda olan Lodz şehri, doğal ortam-insan ilişkisinin, bir kentin tarihsel gelişiminde ne kadar önemli bir rol oynadığına dair güzel bir örnek oluşturmaktadır. Bu çalışmada; Lodz ve çevresinde Son Buzul Maksimumu (18.000-20.000 yıl önce) ardından gelişen doğal ortam koşullarının, tarihsel süreç içerisinde şehrin sosyo-ekonomik ve kültürel gelişimine olan etkileri coğrafi bir bakış açısı ile ele alınmıştır. Son Buzul Maksimumu sırasında, Lodz çevresi İskandinavya'dan gelen buzullarla örtülmüştür. 18.000-20.000 yıl önce buzulların geri çekilmeye başlamasıyla birlikte bölgede periglasyal koşullar gelişmiş ve eriyen buzullardan çıkan sular bölgede bir sandur ovasının gelişimine yol açmıştır. Zamanla ısınan iklim koşulları; geri çekilen buzulların altındaki moren depolarının arasındaki çukur sahalarda bataklık ve sulak alanların; daha yüksek olan drumlinler üzerinde ise gür ve kesif ormanların gelişmesini sağlamıştır. Başlangıçta dezavantaj sağlayan bu doğal ortam koşulları, (zengin su kaynakları ve yoğun orman örtüsü), 19.yy ortalarına gelindiğinde avantaja dönüştürülerek, Lodz'da bir tekstil imparatorluğunun doğmasını sağlamıştır. Kentin potansiyelinin farkına varan Ludwig Geyer, Karol Scheibler ve Izrael Poznanski gibi Alman ve Yahudi yatırımcıların kurdukları fabrika kompleksleri ile tekstil endüstrisinin hızla gelişmesi sağlanmıştır. Öyle ki tekstil endüstrisinin bu gelişimi ile birlikte, Lodz bir yandan "Polonya'nın Manchester"ı ünvanını almış; diğer yandan ise Lehler, Almanlar, Yahudiler ve Ruslar olmak üzere farklı etnik ve dini kültürlere ev sahipliği yapan multikültürel bir kent kimliği kazanmıştır. Ancak II. Dünya Savaşı Lodz'daki tekstil endüstrisinin gerilemesine sebep olmuş ve gerçekleşen zorunlu göçler sonucu şehir multikültürel özelliğini kaybetmiştir. Sosyalizmin çöküşünün ardından Lodz şehrine yeni bir kimlik kazandırılması hedeflenmiş olup; hem kentin geçmişe ait endüstriyel ve kültürel mirasını korumak hem de kentin sosyo kültürel hayatını yeniden canlandırmak amacıyla çeşitli canlandırma projeleri uygulanmaya başlanmıştır. Bu projeler ile Lodz'un endüstriyel mirasının hem geçmişe hem de geleceğe ışık tutması amaçlanmıştır.

The city of Lodz, located in the center of Poland and the third largest city in the country, is a good example of how important the natural environment-human relationship plays in the historical development of a city. In this study, the effects of the natural environmental conditions developed in Lodz after the Last Glacial Maximum, (18.000-20.000 years ago) on the socio-economic and cultural development of the city in the historical process are discussed from a geographical perspective. During the Last Glacial Maximum, the area around Lodz was covered by glaciers from Scandinavia. With the retreat of the glaciers 18.000-20.000 years ago, periglacial conditions developed in the region, and the waters coming out of the melting glaciers led to the development of Sandur plains in the region. Climate conditions warming over time; have enabled the development of swamps and wetlands in the areas between the moraine deposits under the retreating glaciers; and lush and dense forests on the higher drumlins. These natural environmental conditions, rich water resources and dense forest cover, which were disadvantageous at the beginning, turned into an advantage by the middle of the 19th century and led to the birth of a textile empire in Lodz. The rapid development of the textile industry was ensured by the factory complexes established by German and Jewish investors such as Ludwig Geyer, Karol Scheibler, and Izrael Poznanski, who realized the potential of the city. With this development of the textile industry, Lodz, on the one hand, has taken the title of "Manchester of Poland"; On the other hand, it has gained a multicultural urban identity that hosts different cultures such as Poles, Germans, Jews, and Russians. However, II. World War II caused the textile industry in Lodz to decline rapidly and the city lost its multicultural feature as a result of forced migration. After the collapse of socialism, it was aimed to give the city of Lodz a new identity; various renovation projects have started to be carried out both in order to protect the industrial and cultural heritage of the city and to revitalize the socio-cultural life of the city. These projects aim to shed light on Lodz's industrial heritage and both the past and the future.
