Dreams, which have remained a subject of curiosity throughout human history, are regarded in Sufi thought not merely as a psychological or physiological state of sleep, but rather as an ontological means of communication reflecting the inner world of the human being. This paper examines the phenomenon of dreams as a medium of karāmah (spiritual grace) and irshād (spiritual guidance) within the framework of er-Risāla of Abdulkerîm el-Kuşeyrî. As a research method, the study adopts a qualitative approach; literature review, textual analysis, and inductive reasoning techniques were employed in the collection and evaluation of data. Focusing solely on er-Risāla, the study analyzes the nature of dreams, their classifications as truthful (ṣādiq) and false (kādhib), dream interpretation, and the influence of dreams on practical life. The findings of the research reveal that Kuşeyrî positions dreams as reflections of meanings created within the heart upon the faculty of imagination and as a form of divine grace manifested through karāmah. He directly associates the degree of truthfulness in dreams with the moral purification and spiritual purity of the seeker (sālik). Truthful dreams experienced through the practices of vigilance (murāqaba) and self-accounting (muḥāsaba), which stand at the center of Sufi training, are considered reflections in sleep of the sincerity demonstrated by the individual while awake. On the other hand, false dreams are not regarded as entirely meaningless; rather, they are interpreted as pedagogical warnings revealing the weaknesses of the lower self and the inner confusion of the individual. As illustrated in the example where Kuşeyrî acted upon the advice he received from the Prophet Muḥammad in a dream concerning his son’s illness and subsequently witnessed his recovery, dreams function as a dynamic means of spiritual guidance directing the daily life of the Sufi and steering him away from error. Furthermore, dream interpretation is understood not as a purely intellectual discipline, but as a spiritual intuition particular to those who have attained purity of heart. Consequently, within Kuşeyrî’s system of thought, dreams are conceived as a divine grace bestowed upon those whose hearts are purified from worldly attachments, as a mirror diagnosing the inclinations of the lower self, and as a practical guide leading one toward truth.
