This study was conducted to examine whether levels of metacognition and subjective well-being among adolescents differ according to sociodemographic variables and to reveal the relationship between them. The sample of this quantitative study, designed with a cross-sectional approach, consisted of 318 students attending public high schools in the Avcılar district of Istanbul during the 2025–2026 academic year. Data were collected using the Sociodemographic Data Collection Form, the Adolescent Subjective Well-Being Scale (ASWBS), and the Metacognition Scale – Child/Adolescent Form (MS-CA); the collected data were analyzed using ANOVA, t-tests, Pearson correlation, Tukey tests, and Hierarchical Linear Regression. The findings indicated no significant differences in subjective well-being and metacognition scores based on gender, grade level, school type, income status, number of siblings, or paternal education level (p > .05). Significant differences were found in life satisfaction based on maternal education level and parental cohabitation status; in life satisfaction and total subjective well-being scores based on perceived social support; and in subjective well-being scores—specifically regarding satisfaction with family relationships, satisfaction with relationships with significant others, life satisfaction, and total scores—based on perceived academic achievement (p < .05). Significant differences were also identified in various sub-dimensions and total scores of subjective well-being, as well as in certain sub-dimensions and total scores of metacognition, based on experiences of discrimination and bullying (p < .05). Pearson correlation analysis revealed a significant, positive, and low-level relationship between metacognition and subjective well-being (r = .238, p < .01). In the hierarchical linear regression analysis, the first model—incorporating the variables of number of siblings, perceived social support, academic achievement, and exposure to bullying and discrimination—explained 10.1% of the variance in subjective well-being scores (R² = .101). Upon adding the total metacognition score to the model, the explained variance rose to 19.3%, representing a significant increase of 9.2% (ΔR² = .092, p < .001). Metacognition emerged as the strongest predictor of subjective well-being when the effects of other variables were controlled (β = .315, p < .001). Consequently, it was determined that subjective well-being increases as the level of metacognition rises and that subjective well-being is associated with various psychosocial factors.
