| dc.description.abstract | Philosophy has been a discipline that cannot be reduced to a single definition throughout history; rather, it has been interpreted in different ways according to the era in which thinkers lived, the methods they adopted, and their understanding of truth. This situation is also clearly evident in the history of Islamic thought. The definitions found in the dictionary tradition are particularly important in revealing the meanings that philosophers attributed to philosophy. This study examines the philosophical understandings of some prominent thinkers within the dictionary tradition of Islamic philosophy. While Kindî defined philosophy as the love of wisdom, the purification of the soul, and the pursuit of truth to the extent of human capacity, Fârâbî considered it a systematic intellectual activity that enables human beings to attain happiness. Ibn Sînâ interpreted philosophy as the perfection of the human being through knowing the truth of existence and emphasized its metaphysical dimension. Ibn Rushd argued that there was no conflict between reason and revelation, accepting philosophy as a legitimate path to understanding religious truths. Zakarīya al-Rāzī centered rational inquiry and critical thinking, whereas Ibn Rāwandī followed a rationalist path that questioned traditional patterns of belief. While Suhrawardī considered intuition and inner enlightenment to be the fundamental elements of acquiring knowledge, Ghazālī critically evaluated philosophy and employed the method of doubt in his search for certain knowledge. In conclusion, philosophy in Islamic intellectual history did not develop as a one- dimensional field, but rather as a rich area of inquiry in which reason, revelation, intuition, morality, and metaphysics intersect. These various definitions put forward by philosophers demonstrate the intellectual depth and dynamism of Islamic philosophy | |
